Ugh. EM1 (and probably EM5) Mysets don't work as expected...

I had what I thought were two simple goals:

  1. Have three sets of presets for different shooting conditions.
  2. Be able to reset the camera to a standard startup condition, which may be one of the presets. That means when I turn the camera on, there is an easy way to
restore it to a known (i.e. one of the presets) set of conditions for its default (i.e. no-myset) state.

The second seems impossible.
If anyone knows how to do it, please tell me.

In the process of trying to figure this out, I have discovered what I claim is a major flaw in the way the em1 and em5 (haven't verified em5 yet but suspect it is the same) mysets work.

Specifically, if you activate a myset via a button, any use of the menu system will discard the current shooting settings (the ones from the myset, as modified by camera controls other than the menu) and return you to the pre-myset state, with any menu changes made applied to the pre-myset state. In addition, you cannot change the P/A/S/M state without discarding the myset condition when the myset is activated from a button.

Example:

Turn camera on, in one of P/A/S/M modes

Set the camera to ISO 200

Save settings to myset4 (hope you don't have this assigned)

Assign Myset4 to a mode dial, say movie (ditto)

Assign myset4 to a button, say fn2

You probably have this assigned but can easily reassign it later because we're only talking about normal shooting mode, not a myset mode. Write it down before assigning it to fn2 ;-).

Set camera to ISO: Auto

Now:

Turn camera off

Turn camera on

Camera is in NoMyset (normal) mode

Note there is no MyX indication in the lower left corner of the viewfinder

Note ISO-A icon in upper left of viewfinder

Turn mode dial to movie

Note My4 in lower left corner of viewfinder

Note ISO:200

ok, camera is in proper myset mode

Assuming you have SCP enabled:

Hit OK to bring up SCP

Change ISO to 400

Return to shooting mode

Note My4 is still present in lower left corner of viewfinder

Note ISO 400

so far, so good, all is as expected

(You could also set ISO via button if you have a way to do that, like

Hit menu, go to the gears, select E, go to ISO and set ISO to 800

Return to shooting mode

Note My4 is still present in lower left corner of viewfinder

Note ISO 800

still good, all is as expected

ok...

Turn dial off of movie (Myset4) mode and return to P/A/S/M

Note My4 disappears from lower left corner of viewfinder/screen

Note ISO returns to ISO-A as expected

Press fn2 to switch to Myset 4

Note My4 in lower left corner of viewfinder

Note ISO 200 icon

Hit OK to bring up SCP

Change ISO to 400

Return to shooting mode

Note My4 is still present in lower left corner of viewfinder

Note ISO 400

still good, all is as expected

Hit menu to enter menu mode

Hit menu again to return to shooting mode

Note that My4 has disappeared from the lower left corner

Note ISO has returned to ISO-A

Neither of these is expected; you have exited Myset mode

Ugh.

Then assume you have presets and want to switch from A to S:

Press fn2 to activate the myset again.

Note My4 in lower left corner of viewfinder

Note ISO 200 icon

Rotate P/A/S/M to something other than the P/A/S/M you were on when you pressed the fn2 button to activate Myset4

Note the My4 is no longer present in the lower left corner of the viewfinder.

Note ISO has returned to Auto

Ugh again.
