Why is OVF so much brighter on a 30yo film SLR?

This evening I spend a short while messing about comparing the view finders on my old film SLR cameras with my current DSLR.  I used 50mm lenses on all and 35mm on the DSLR a Nikon D5200.   The view finders on the film cameras were all significantly brighter indoors, and bizarrely my 32yo Nikon was by far the brightest.  Why is this?

Ps: Manual focusing with split centre sphere in OVF was also much easier with the ancient film SLRs.
