There are many other bird photographers that get excellent results with that combination. I really doubt your lens is that bad. There are many other factors that control how sharp a photo is so personally I think you are doing something wrong. One of the biggest problems I see with bird photographers is too slow of a shutter speed. Bird photography should never be attempted at less than 1/1000th of a second since any slower with a telephoto will allow camera shake. I don't think you should give up so easily.
