Why is video important to digital cameras?

I have been using digital cameras from their inception. My mission was to get as close to 35mm quality as I could. My two current cameras (NEX 7 and Nikon D7100) come as close as I can tell. But  lately it seems to me that video has become the overriding thing with most on this forum. I do not understand. I buy digital cameras for their imaging quality, not for movies. Someone please explain.
