Future of photographic education.

I spent my afternoon meeting with the advisory board for our community college's photography program. The consensus of all the photographers, retail imaging store owners, faculty and administrators was that in order to survive in photography as a vocation students would have to become more wide ranging and competent "content providers" instead of "just" doing still photos. That includes courses on producing a large shoot (many specialists on set), technical writing (and one would hope for scripting as well), a course of video production and video editing, as well as a course in social media marketing, including proficiency in building web vehicles such as web sites and e-mail marketing collateral.

The curriculum already includes a course in business and post production and will add a course in marketing.

Have we left anything out?
