if she takes photos mostly of kids indoors, I would recommend 35mm lens over the 50. 50 on current Pentax APS-C size sensor cameras would be more of portrait focal length. But there are also some nice possibilities between these two - Limited 40/2,8 and 43/1,9.

Regarding camera - K50 vs K5II - I think that's more related to shes shooting style. Both have great image quality and low-light qualities, both are weather sealed.

You said she uses K10D with kit zoom 18-55. If that's older not weather sealed version you can get K-50 kit with 18-55 WR - that will be a great weather sealed combo to get out and take photos of kids in any weather conditions.

K50 + 18-55WR + 35/2,4 + 50/1,8 + ...
