How important is a calibrated monitor for post processing pictures from the D800?

hi,
with all the IPS panel monitors and the manufacturers' claim that factory settings are as good for post processing DSLR pictures, I would like to ask a few questions:

  1. Does a calibrated monitor make a lot of difference when one process raw pics from the D800 (or any other cameras for that matter) ?
  2. Dell, Philips and Samsung have IPS panel monitors that are supposedly catered to customers who are keen on processing pictures, how do these compare to a calibrated monitor?
  3. Which calibration software is the best in terms of value for money and user friendliness?

apologise if this has been discussed before....
thanks for all the advice
