Is the current 24-70mm f2.8 better than the old 35-70mm?

Hi,

I just bought a D610 for boxing day and I've been using some borrowed lenses including a Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 D. I know the 24-70mm f2.8 is a super well regarded lens and it's on my wish list. My question for the forum is, How big a difference is there between the new 24-70 and the older 35-70 in terms of speed, image quality, overall performance, etc?

Here's the Nikkor in question: http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/zoom/normalzoom/af_zoom35-70mmf_28d/

Thanks,

J
