To correct the D7100's numbers for the crop use log2(sqrt(15.36/24)) = -.32 EV (1.92 dB). But remember, this "2x crop" has one more stop of DOF than DX. So, on my 300 f2.8 VR I might shoot f3.5 instead of f5 and at one stop lower ISO.

So. let's set up the scenario. On the D7000 I shoot a 200-400 f4 at 375mm f5 at 1/1250 ISO 200. On the D7100 cropped I shoot a 300 f2.8 at f3.5 at 1/1250 ISO 100. Per dxomark:

When Steve writes: "Using the crop mode on the D7100 gives you around the same MP as a regular image from the D7000.....How does an image from the D7100 taken in crop mode compare with the an image from the D7000 quality-wise?"

Couldn't the scenario be shoot D7100 in crop mode at 300 f2.8 at f3.5 at 1/1250 ISO 100...then shoot with the D7000 at same 300 f2.8 at f3.5 at 1/1250 ISO 100...but move closer to keep the same framing as D7100 crop framing? DoF is not a player unless we specify keep the DoF the same. ("equivalent" photos as opposed to "equal" photos)

Then how would the numbers compare?

My opinions are my own and not those of DPR or its administration. They carry no 'special' value (except to me and Lacie of course)
