Sometimes, when you in a hostile or potentially hostile location, you do not want to use your best lenses (or camera).
If you are at a busy beach (where someone can kick sand on your lens), in a muddy field or or out hiking with some climbing on steep slopes, you can use the kit lens in lieu.

Kit lenses can give good pictures. I used my kit lens many times when I do not want to take the chance of damaging my better lenses.

So, take them along, as you never know when you need them.
