TV manufacturers have to find some way to convince people to upgrade. The big wave was switching from CRT to flat panels a few years back, but most people keep their TVs for a long time (in the order of 10 years) or until they break, not because of the cost of upgrading but because they are so large and unwieldy to acquire and dispose of.

They tried LED backlights instead of CCFL, and that didn't work. They tried 3D, and that didn't work either (I personally would refuse to buy a 3D TV set). They tried "smart" TVs with features like Netflix, but that was not compelling enough. Now, 4K.

I personally would wait until sets with HDMI 2.0 for 4Kp60 become available - the current HDMI 1.4 generation are limited to 30fps unless you use exotic DisplayPort technology. The great thing about 4K is now we have a way to display our high-megapixel images in a large way.

4K video content is going to take a while to arrive, because of limitations in cable TV bandwidth on current hybrid fiber-coax networks, as well as limits to over-the-air bandwidth, and the sorry state of US Internet infrastructure under the FCC-protected telco-cableco duopoly makes it hard for the likes of Netflix, Vudu or Apple to bring 4K video to most.

Film cinematographers and make-up artists are going to have to up their game considerably to adopt 4K, as the format reveals any flaws in technique or equipment, not to mention actors' less than perfect physiques, specially those who like to party hard.
