SX50HS with 950nm filter
Dec 31, 2013

I did some experiments with a 950nm IR filter and the SX50.  My observations:

It looks completely black, even looking at the sun

It takes very dark pictures.  I can expose the sun and outdoor scenes on auto, but it's at the limit of being dark.  Even the sun was 1/160 and ISO 250, f/6.5

The contrast is very low

It's hard to focus, even at the best focus, it seems fuzzy (this may be due to the inherent long wavelengths)

I didn't have my filter thread adapter yet, and ended up breaking it, so this is the last pictures I'll take.  I have other cameras that may not block IR as much, but I never had a chance to try them all.  I don't recommend this filter at all unless you've converted your camera.  If I do this again, I will try with a 720nm and not even touch it unless I have the threaded adapter.
