Is a 50mm f1.4 prime worth buying?

Hi all

I’m going on a one day course for studio portraiture later in the year and originally intended to use my 17-55mm f2.8 lens on my 7D. However, the thought crossed my mind to buy a 50mm f1.4 prime, primarily for the reduced DoF at f1.4; i.e. to try to get the “one sharp eye and softer face” type of shots.

The 50mm I’m thinking of are Canon’s and the Sigma F1.4 EX DG HSM. (Even this is not as easy as it looks given some reviews say the Canon is softer than the Sigma, and other reviews the exact opposite!)

Because the 17-55mm has 3 stop IS vs (as I understand it) no IS on the 50mms, the so called low-light speed advantage of f1.4 is zero.

Thus, the only advantage I can see is my original thought of the DoF between f2.8 and f1.4, but is it really enough difference to make buying one worthwhile?
