Best walkabout lens for canon 7D

Hi,

My wife and I have a canon 7d that we are enjoying.  It came with a 28-135 kit lens but we have been using our 28-75 f2.8 tamron lens and 50mm f1.4 lens most of the time.  I recently sold the canon 28-135 on craigslist for 200 And I'm itching for some new glass.  I am thinking I would like something a little wider for day to day/vacation use.  We have 3 young children and mostly shoot mix of indoor/outdoor people photos with occasional landscape shot.  I do also have a 55-250 canon lens but find I don't use it much.  Currently thinking about tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the canon 18-135 STM lens.  Would like to keep cost to less than 400 or so.   any thoughts on best choice between the 28-75 I have vs these other 2?  Any other options you would consider?  I'm kind of intrigued by the ultra wide angle lenses (ie tokina 11-16 f2.8) but worry it will end up collecting dust like my 55-250.

Also, wanted to get thoughts on risks/benefits of buying lenses on ebay or craigslist.  When you are checking out used lenses how should one evaluate?  Are there any other better marketplaces to buy/sell used lenses?
