Comparison #1 - Df and D800, both with 50mm 1.8G. D800 has grip attached. So if you had the D800 rigged like this for big lenses, this is what the difference would be reaching for either.

Comparison #2 - same deal, but with grip removed. The Df doesn't look THAT much smaller here, but it certainly feels it.

Comparison #3 - Here you see where the size difference is more apparent. The D800 looks more massive and the D800 AF module and flash are probably taking up a lot of that volume. Shallow grip of the Df also makes for the smaller feel, but requires an adjustment in handling with larger lenses. The beefy D800 even makes it's 50mm lens look larger, though they're the same size.

Comparison #4 - With a tiny 50mm E series AIS mounted, the Df is still smaller than the lens-less D800.

Shown here with a SB400 attached. The Df looks like it needs a flash to match it's design, though the SB400 is better than then built in flash of the D800.
