RX10 | f/5.6 Appears to Achieve Optimum Sharpness
8 months ago

This isn't really a surprise, but I figured I'd post it in case anyone's curious.  On my RX10, f/5.6 appears to provide optimum sharpness.  f/2.8 is sharp enough, but there's a noticeable region of softness on fine edges.  Same at f/4.  By f/5.6, however, things have sharpened up dramatically.

Here's an extreme crop of a 200mm equiv shot of a car several blocks away.  Straight OOC jpegs at Extra Fine setting.  The camera was resting on a table with a 2-second timer, so there should be absolutely no camera shake.  Certainly not a definitive test, but I think you'll see my point pretty clearly.

f/5.6, 1/60, ISO 125

f/2.8, 1/250, ISO 125

I plan to use the RX10 as a general purpose adventure camera (hiking, backpacking, four-wheeling).  Landscape photography is an important component of this.  I've therefore been running some tests on the lens and camera.  I must say: the results at base ISO (125) and f/5.6 are extremely encouraging.
