I was going to suggest this as well because it's faster, sharper, AND... the 50/1.8 is sharper at f/2.8 than the 17-55 is (I agree that the 50/1.8 is pretty useless wide open most of the time but stopped down it's great - it's just that stopping down kind of defeats the purpose of a fast prime).  So, you may be missing the 36-49mm focal range (the 40mm STM pancake is pretty cheap right now), but overall, you're getting even lower light performance (by 1 and 1/3 stops) and it's sharper.  It's heavier, and a tad longer, and more expensive, but if it's in the budget, it should probably be considered depending on your desire to change lenses.
