Need help deciding on Travel & Portrait lens
9 months ago

Hello all!

I am currently a portrait photographer (children and family) and am looking into pursuing a career in travel photography.

Right now I have a 50mm 1.8 and I had a tamron 17-50 2.8, but it broke. The 50 is too tight for a general walk-around travel lens, so I have been looking into other lens. I need something that is fast, as I tend to only shoot natural/low light photography (and I love bokeh!). It would be awesome to get a lens that is compatible for both travel and portrait photography, if possible. I’m more interested in primes than zooms. My budget is around $1,000 for adding one or two lens to my collection (which is just the 50mm 1.8 at the moment!).

Right now I am currently looking at:

Sigma 30 1.4 (found a used one for $220, would use for portraits and travel photography, although it might be a bit unflattering for portraits)

Sigma 1.8 18-35 ($800 and would probably use only for travel photography)

Sigma 35 1.4 ( $900, could potentially be good for both portraits and travel photography, although would be a bit tight for travel shots, and a bit unflattering for portraits)

Tamron 17-50 2.8 (found a used for $300 and could potentially use for portraits and travel photography, but wish it was faster)

What are your first thoughts? Suggestions? I’d love any kind of advice, so fire away!
