Comparing flash to strobe... am I getting the idea?
Dec 20, 2013

Looking for a strobe light to use with my A65 camera, that puts my hvl-F58 flashes in the shade. I see they are rated differently but don't understand how to compare them.

I did find 1 unit that is comparable in price to a used HVL-58 (sony flagship flash) and if I'm reading this correctly, is no more powerful or only slight so.

URL:
HVL-F58

At the above site, on the 'specifications' tab I see this:

( Guide No. 190' (57.91 m) ISO100 at 105 mm position)

=======================================

Then

URL:
Impact Digital Monolight 400W/s

At that site, on the 'specifications' tab I see this:

( Guide Number 197 in ft (60 in meters) @ ISO 100 )

======================================+

So can I conclude they are about the same so far as how much light they throw?

If so, is it generally true that you pay about the same for flash power, be it a battery unit or 120 V ac?

I was hoping to find a 'plugintowall' strobe that was much more powerful in the $350 range (new).

Am I way off base?

Is there some other factor besides portability (and buying batteries) that makes one better in some way than the other?

And a final question; are there battery powered units that are considerably more powerful than the HVL-F58?

Sony SLT-A65
