manual override... do people really like it?

it's been my experience that without a split-prism viewfinder, you aren't going to nail focus with today's lens/body combos using manual focus.  even when it's sharp in the viewfinder, the focus is usually off during manual focus shots in a pinch.  the most useful i find manual override is when the AF is WAY off hunting far too short/long, i can twist the focus ring towards the extreme and re-try autofocusing after putting it in the ballpark.

are you guys using some cool technique i don't know about that warrants all of the manual override praise i see on the forums?
