Stitching scans best method? I'm getting warped images.

I am trying to stitch scans together (anywhere from 2-20 scans per image, usually <10), but am getting some skewing/distortion.  All of the original artworks are perfect rectangles, but they are coming out with geometric distortions.

I tried Photoshop>Photomerge>Reposition but can't get good results.

I also tried Autopan Giga with planar projection chosen, but still no good (stitched image has an hourglass shape when it should be a perfect rectangle)

I did a good amount of overlap, like 30-50%.

It should be pretty simple, I don't want any of the scans stretched or warped, just repositioned and stitched.

Can anyone suggest a good method/tool for doing this?  Other than manually? (I have a lot of images to scan/stitch).  I'm use Mac.
