Hi Trafford, its a lovely shot of the bird, but as others have mentioned, the tail is over exposed. Difficult lighting is a challenge for any camera and if you had underexposed the bird,the tail would probably have been properly exposed, but then you have a dark bird. Sometimes its better to underexpose a little to help get some detail in the "whites" as its easier to bring back detail in slightly underexposed areas than to get detail in overexposed areas.

I have this sort of thing happen a lot to my images and its something I'm aware of, but I'm not aware of it every time I take a shot. Usually I'm too busy concentrating on getting the bird and forget about everything else.
