When someone else does that, Nikon will respond immediately to it. But until that happen, Nikon will be just happy maximizing profits. That's how oligopoly works.

Well, I'm hoping that the Pentax K3 starts to add a little heat. And, it seems only a matter of time until someone does a mirrorless with decent AF that goes really, really fast (perhaps Sony or Olympus). And, Canon is rumored to be doing something along these lines in 2014. We'll see how it all plays out. I don't think the segment will be ignored by everyone.

Meanwhile Nikon has given me plenty of reasons to lose my loyalty and be receptive to other brands (something I would have never considered a few years ago).  Good luck with your little game Nikon.
