I hope i am not being overoptimistic when i say that i believe most (not all) people who spend around £2000 on a camera have a better idea about MP. The d700 sold in very large numbers and the 5d3 is selling well despite having only the same number of MP as the mk 2.

The 16mp sensor gives ultimate low light performance. the 24mp has no significant advantage over the 36 and less  detail.
