And also the film Ricoh GRs are not known for being very reliable compared to other classics like Contax T2 and Hexar AF etc.

A Konica Off-road 28mm 3.5 manufactured in 1990 might be the one he want. Of all the generations of it it is only the 1990 which have 8 elements in 7 groups. The other generations of it have less good lens specs.

The 1990 is the one below while the others have noticeably less protruding protecting lens-shell.
