As the D800E was a niche camera in the DSLR world, so are the A7, and particularly the A7R. If you are interested in spectacular resolution that will all you to create large fine art prints, even from cropped images, the A7R is the only game in compact town(that is affordable). If you want to create world class final product with a camera that fits in your briefcase, these are great choices. However, your technique will have to be meticulous to optimize your keeper rate.

If you want to shoot sports, your kids, candid street photography, print small or post on the web, the A7/A7R will function, but you can do better for less with other cameras. That is exactly the case with the D800/800E. These are terrific niche cameras, but can never be all things to all people.
