The Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 was one of the first M4/3 lenses, and the very first fast lens for M4/3.

And it is wicked sharp.

As a result, the lens was a huge sensation, and got rave reviews from both users and professional review sites. Everyone was calling it a "must have" lens for M4/3 users.

But since those days, better fast lenses have become available:

  • 25mm f/1.4, expensive but stellar lens
  • 17mm f/1.8, extremely nice lens for street shooters
  • 45mm f/1.8, ideal portrait lens, and reasonably priced
  • 75mm f/1.8, incredibly great medium tele lens. High price, but worth it

Every lens listed above is a better lens than the 20mm f/1.7. Even the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 is a better choice for a pancake prime lens.

Panasonic's response to the slow AF of the 20mm f/1.7 lens was to give it a cosmetic redesign, raise the price, and call it a type II lens. I really wish they had done something to improve AF speed instead.

Incidentally, those Sigma lenses, while not as fast, are really outstanding lenses. And incredibly good values. As usual with Sigma, they were designed for something else (the APSC based Sony NEX) but their M4/3 versions seem to work wonderfully on M4/3 cameras.
