You are right. If I hold it just a few inches from the bulb it is only partially open. I was holding it about 18 inches away in my initial test. I haven't seen the sun in several days. I can't tell you what would happen in strong sunlight.

Thank you so much for trying this for me! So while it is normal for the iris to "close" a bit when focusing strong lights, it's strange that turning the camera on in strong light keeps the iris half closed till the next reboot. So this behavior it's not limited to my camera.

I have sent a support request to Canon, I'll keep you updated. I'd say this is a firmware bug. Anyway, there's no problem in the photos taken so we have nothing to worry about.
