Snowy owls are moving south.
Nov 25, 2013

This Fall, snowy owls have been moving southward into Quebec and Ontario and the bordering states including numbers of sightings in Maine, Mosquito Creek, Ohio, Sandy Hook--Observation Deck, Monmouth County, New Jersey, Sanilac, Michigan, Huron, Michigan, Chipewa Michigan, Kenosha Wisconsin, Dakota Minnesota and I see Presqu'ile Provincial Park in Ontario reported their first. Someone reported a snowy in Ottawa as well. Time will tell how far south they'll move this winter. Check eBirds for more info.

Today it was blustery cold here in Ottawa with strong wind gusts bringing -20^C temps in the morning. -17*C wind chill in the afternoon as the sun warmed things up slightly.

Although I was dressed warmly in a Canada Goose parka, I had forgotten one of my gloves. Spotted a white blob far off in the distance. Wasn't sure what it was so eyed it for a bit. It must have moved slightly because I saw a faint shift in the colour. This made me take a closer look. Yes, my first snowy owl this Fall.

Taking out my trusty Canon 40D (ask your parents kids I quickly (hands cold and strong winds) setup the new Canon 500 f4 II. Because the owl was so far away, I added a 1.4x and 2x to the lens. Used Live View to focus but the image on the LCD was shaking so bad. Long focal length and winds made it difficult to focus but somehow I managed. At times my bare hand felt like it was going to fall off with the numbing cold. Warmed it up periodically in my pocket.

Did not expect anything good but was I surprised when I got home and uploaded to the PC. Even with the 500 + 1.4x + 2x the owl was still small in the overall image. Thanks for looking and keep an eye out for Snowy Owls in your area this Winter.
