So I am pretty neutral on this type of killing. The lion isn't about to go extinct any time.

"Lions are listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature—one rung below an official Endangered listing. There is no question that the big cats are in decline. There are an estimated 30,000 lions remaining in all of Africa, down from perhaps 200,000 as recently as the 1970s."

At what point do you become concerned Brian?

I don't.  That reduction in size has a lot more to do with urban expansion than anything else.  People don't like living near them.  Stop urban expansion and you stop the thinning of the lions.  I don't see that happening.  They will for the most part go the way of the wolves.    I am pretty sure you would not want Africans coming in and repopulating your neighborhood with wolves, would you?

If lions went unchecked for 10 years i am sure their population would be right back up to 200,000 and you would have huge outcries from the locals to do something about it.

I am sorry if I don't take a "Oh look, it is so cute" approach to this issue.  I am not for the senseless killing of animals.  In this case either keep the humans from encroaching on the wilderness or you will see the animals thinned.  This is no different than what happened to the plains grizzly bear in North America.
