I still think a sensor attached to the lens is The Future.  We're not that far from the day when each year's sensors are much the same as those of a few years before.  And you can still make it so the back end with the sensor is replaceable with simple tools on a clean workbench, but sealed when out in the field.

It would be extra excellent if there was a standard sensor-to-body connector that lots of companies shared.  One that could work either by direct attachment or over a cable.  The sensor-to-lens attachment can be totally proprietary.
