But people already are putting their money where their mouth is--they're voting with their feet and their wallets. Why else are DSLR sales in decline?

Cameras are monolithic; phones are not--they are eminently programmable. Those of us who have used or written scripts for Canon's popular CHDK custom firmware know this. Motion detectors, lightning detectors, custom intervalometers that can both focus stack and perform HDR simultaneously, abound.

Which Nikon DSLR can do that? None. That's why we have apps such as DSLR bot and trigger trap, and hardware like the CamRanger.

In a very real sense, we're already building better cameras, augmenting Nikon's uninspired feature-set with cobbled-together parts from disparate sources. How long before the camera itself is taken out of the equation, supplanted entirely by the parts upon which it has come to rely?

You are wise, p01.  Image devices are approaching another intersection of advanced technologies, much as happened in the transition from film to digital cameras.  Companies looking backward instead of forward risk the same fate that befell Kodak.
