I've had success with using Xpro1 for copywork (as an inexpensive option) - and the technical, pixel-level requirements with copywork are pretty stringent, especially contrasted with other gear I use.

I only use C1 - which produces acceptable results (to my eye), and a latest version of Dcraw - which is a bit of pain to use but the demosaicing and color detail is impeccable. I can write up my dcraw workflow if you are interested, but it's not for everyone and it's laborious.

As a lyrical aside - yes I do agree that ACR/Aperture conversion would not have passed the muster at say Corbis or Masterfile, but the quality of stock is so low these days that it probably doesn't matter any longer.
