Yeah, right, "no one" wanted a cable release anymore.  Which is why they continued to make cable releases, except they updated them to modern electronic cable releases.   Furthermore, your theory of "cost savings" makes no sense because they replaced the old hole in the shutter button with an electronic socket hole (elsewhere on the body) for the electronic cable release!  I doubt there was much "cost savings" in replacing one hole for another.

No, more likely they replaced the plunger release with an electronic release because it was a better upgrade.  More flexible, easier to plug in and out, easier to store, allowed for attaching an electronic intervalometer, etc.
