But I've been envious of the D4 sensor ever since seeing the high ISO real world advanatges,

What D4 high ISO advantages? Are you talking about the extra 40 points over the D610?

Example please?

I can't fathom paying $1000 more than the D610 for a few extra knobs and less resolution.

The reason you can't fathom it is because you probably have not compared high ISO prints from a D800 vs. a D4 out of an Epson R3000 printer.

The D4 sensor's advantages are not only in noise, but also in dynamic range at high ISO. Since I ALREADY own a D800, adding the D4 sensor to my kit ADDS to the capabilities. A D610 is a solid step backwards in IQ.
