An excellent d400 would go a long way to bolstering my faith and make me spend a lot more money on "new" Nikon gear.

The problem with this statement is what new DX glass does Nikon have to sell a pro user? The only really pro level lens in the DX lineup is the 17-55 and it's how old now? If they released a D400, they'd also have to design and release a bunch of glass to make this a pro system.

I don't agree with that notion, Stacey.  I didn't buy the 17-55 when Nikon only offered DX cameras.  Pro glass is readily available and works with both formats.

Sure, it would be nice to have a couple of special DX lenses, but that isn't what is going to make or break a pro class DX system, IMO. If they don't continue to offer TOL DX cameras with pro features like the d300, then there is no reason to bother with pro level DX lenses.
