How do modern cameras compare...

to old film cameras in terms of light capturing ability?

I am just curious, as I think it's marvelous that I am able to use my RX100ii in low ambient light and capture decent shots of my kids playing in the living room for example without using the flash.

I just remember in the good old days, it was flash all the way, like a law, "you must use flash inside".

Am I right in thinking this or was I just using mediocre/poor film cameras which did not do the format justice?
