I think that the core problem with these discussions is that the vast majority of people are lacking the mental library of likely-realistic textures, and don't notice when textures are false; that's why they are so adamant about the aliased captures being "so detailed".

You, and I, and apparently only a minority of people notice that there are areas that are prone to excessive brightness and darkness, and that edges are emphatically placed where they aren't.
