What does it take to cook a sensor?
Oct 27, 2013

I am interested in possibly trying out a Sony A7r for commercial landscape photography, as I would like to use my Canon lenses on the new 36MP sensor and drop some weight at the same time.

I have one serious question regarding mirrorless cameras though.

How hard or easy is it to cook the sensor in direct sunlight?

With a DSLR and optical VF, I can leave the mirror down to keep the sensor safe for shots like this. It took a long time to set up and complete this shot which is actually 3 exposures blended for Sun Star, and DOF.

If this was done with a mirrorless camera and a 16mm F2.8 lens, would it have eventually been cooked/burnt inside?
