Why was the OM-D E-M5 so successful?

You might find it funny that I'd ask such a question. But it seems to be a legitimate one these days.

If I were asked the question I would say: 5-axis IBIS, new sensor, Extra Dials, and overall build quality (including weather sealing).

But it seems that there is a wave of products suggesting that the OM-D E-M5 was successful for its looks. i.e. the controversial hump and the retro style.

So here's the list of cameras now influenced by the E-M5:

1- E-M1

2- Rumored Olympus Stylus

3- New Sony A7/A7r

4- Rumored Nikon DF

So are manufacturers disillusioned by the thought that the E-M5 success  is due to its looks? or do you think they're right?

I personally would have preferred a rangefinder style camera but I got the E-M5 for other reasons listed.
