There are plenty of instances where a camera's auto settings won't work, or where the "scene mode" cannot be remembered or may not work either.  Night skies, long zoom shots of birds, or various other cases will confound the AE or confuse the AF.

That said, there are far more "everyday" situations where the auto settings and AF do a far better job, and faster, than the proud Macho who never took a bad picture, never lost money on a stock, and wins at every game he plays.  Let that braggart claim what he likes.  But don't let it bother you if you don't have the same luck he claims.
