Were PNS cameras a cash cow for Nikon 5 years ago?

If so, that would be concerning.  I've always viewed DLSR cameras as a niche market.  IMO it's a niche market that isn't likely to go away in the next handful of years.  There will be enough photography enthusiasts (including pro's and semi-pro's) to keep that niche going.

Nikon focusing on entry level DX and FX is, IMO, a smart move.  The smaller the sensor the easier it is for a cell phone to compete.  The growth of cell phone cameras can actually helps push more people into DSLR's.  5 years ago I was that type who would spend $250 on a PNS camera.  My iphone 4s is damn near as good as the PNS's on Best Buy's shelf.  All of a sudden an entry level DSLR for $600 makes a lot of sense.
