Tripod Stability: How important is the right sized ball head?

Just curious as to what is the bigger contributor to tripod stability?   I can imagine an under-sized ball head might contribute to "droop/drift" and prematurely wear out.  But will a right-sized one improve stability by eliminating some vibration?

Again, thank you for all your wisdom, I would be lost without DP folks!
