Is it a "must buy"?  No.  Lens hoods do a good job of protecting the front element.  If it does get nicked, front elements are inexpensive to replace and small scratches won't affect IQ anyway.

OTOH, a quality UV filter won't hurt anything.  And if it makes you more likely to go out and take pictures then you should absolutely buy one.

There's nothing worse than the camera equivalent of the automotive garage queen.
