Off-Camera AF Assist?
Oct 21, 2013

Hi,

How does the AF assist work when the Speedlite is connected with an ETTL compatible cord off-camera? I assume there is not difference on- or off-camera.

My understanding is that the Speedlite emits an IR pattern that helps with subject auto-focusing. If the off-camera flash is pointing at the subject I assume the camera uses that same that IR pattern (e.g. it has now way of knowing flash is off-camera). In other words there is no "back and forth" between the IR pattern and the camera, the Speedlite simply projects the IR pattern. So it will aid work off-camera assuming the Speedlite is pointed at the subject.

Thanks,

Tom
