Sorry - I just got the LF1 and haven't had much time with it either.   You can set it to take RAW + jpeg.  I would recommend doing that and getting a large memory card (or two).  That way you have the best of both worlds.  I think in the auto setting, it only takes jpeg though.

I set the control dial around the lens of the camera to change ISO but you can set it to change things like WB, step zoom, shutter speed, aperture, and some other things I can't remember off the top of my head.  The "advanced" pdf manual it comes with is huge, over 200 pages, so I've only skimmed through some of it and looked up some particular things of interest.

One of the very first things I did was turn off the beep and shutter sounds.

Not much help I know but enjoy your trip.  I haven't had much time with this little gem of a camera yet either but I think whatever you choose setting wise, you'll be happy
