GX7 - Shutter shock and eShutter test with 14-42 pz lens
11 months ago

For those interested (and those that still believe that shutter shock is a myth), see below some sample testing done with the GX7 comparing a series of photos taken with the 14-42x (famous for exhibiting the shutter shock issue on the GX1 notably).

Methodology:

-All photos taken at 1/160 (speed known to suffer the most the SS issue) and 42mm, F7.1 with stabilizer on (my experience showed on or off makes little difference).

-Zoom to center of picture at 120%.

-Leftmost column photos taken with standard shutter.

-Second column from left with 1 sec delay option on GX7 (supposely to reduce SS)

-Third column from left with 2 sec delay option on GX7 (supposely to reduce SS)

-Fourth column from left with eshutter.

Results speak for themselves if you look at the full size picture, my interpretation being

1. GX7 still suffers from SS with pz lens

2. 1 or 2 sec delay do not solve the SS issue. Maybe a tad better with 2 sec but not worth it given it is not very practical

3. eShutter makes a huge difference

For comparison, I then compared the best photos of each series above to the 12-35 (at 35mm).

1. 12-35 does not seem to suffer from the SS with eshutter barely better

2. Center crop of 14-42 holds its own to 12-35 in eshutter mode.

Hope this helps anyone wondering whether electronic shutter is worth using.
