A couple of comments here.  First, I own and like the FZ200.  One of the things I like about it is the larger grip.  However, when you said birding, I knew you'd want a longer focal length.

Second, I've had problems with many cameras with inadvertent pressing of buttons with the thick of my thumb.  In most cases, I've been able to solve that by use of the Lens Mate Rear Wheel Protector Ring.  It was designed for the S90; but fits a lot of other cameras, including my FZ200, FZ150, Canon SX230HS, SX260HS.  That and some carefully placed Velcro pile (the softer, furry half of Velcro) has usually been enough to solve the issue for me.  I, too, have large hands.

I mentiion the fixes, as the SX50HS probably has the best lens and IS among the longer superzooms.  The FZ70 is an unknown to me, with no good reviews yet - although it is even bigger than my FZ200.
