Well.

Using AF-S still gives you the ability to choose other than the center focus point using the selector-arrows.

And even using AF-S, using AF-Areamode Auto, the camera by it self can choose a single point outside the center.

And AF-S is not single point - AF-S is single servo. You rearly should read the article you were adviced to.
