Ultrawide - NEX better than m43?
Sep 20, 2013

Hello comrades,

I like shooting landscape photos and yet - apart from a Rokinon 7.5 fisheye - I do not own an ultrawide lens for my E-P3.

Reasons include the following:

The M. Zuiko 9-18 doesn't go wide enough for me.

The 7-14 is big and heavy for a mirrorless lens, doesn't take filters (I'm a big filter user) and seems to have some compatibility issues with Olympus cameras.

I've been looking at other options, and to me it looks like Sony has hit it out of the park with their current kit.

Here are some specs:

NEX 7 and 10-18mm f4: Megapixels: 24. Equivalent to 15-27mm. Total weight: 578g. Take filters? Yes.

E-M5 and 9-18: Megapixels: 16. Equivalent to 18-36mm. Total weight: 580g. Take filters? Yes.

E-M5 and 7-14: Megapixels: 16mp. Equivalent to 14-24. Total weight: 725g. Take filters? No.

All of these options are stabilised (in-body for m43, in-lens for Sony) and none of the lenses are weather-sealed, but ... and it's a big but .... the Sony has a 100 per cent larger sensor!

As for image quality, I find the photos in this review to be pretty convincing:

I've been waiting a long time for Olympus and Panasonic to come up with a really satisfying ultrawide option, and meanwhile I'm restricted to the 12/2.0 and fisheye at wide angles.

I'm really considering picking up an NEX 7 / 10-18mm.
